Global Norming Podcast

Over a 7 week time frame, I created a 4 part podcast series in which I investigated environmental issues and gave power to generation z. The process was something I had never imagined before and therefore, lots of planning went into the production and post production of Global Norming: Gen Z’s Guide to Sustainable Living.

Throughout the process, I was able to create something that I am extremely proud to present. Though all of my planning and preparation, my passion for environmental change motivated me to create something that can live outside of school. Below is a detailed list of artifacts and the process that I went through to create Global Norming.

Week 1

Project Proposal

I kicked off my project by first creating a detailed project plan that would guide the rest of my production. I first performed research, both primary and secondary, on what kind of podcasts people enjoy and what makes them special. I also performed preliminary research on the issues I was going to talk about during my episodes. Using this research, I created a detailed plan that included my audiences, podcast objective, production plan, mood boards, as well as other information. Like all things in life, I had to make small changes along the way, but this project proposal was a great kickstart and guide.

Week 2

Project Plan

As with every project, I needed a plan. Week 2’s endeavor was creating a project plan that would guide me for the rest of the semester. To create this project plan I utilized Asana, a free project management software. My Asana board broke up the rest of the project into pre-production weeks, production week, and post production weeks, all equipped with their own list of tasks. Breaking the project into manageable pieces made me anticipate what was coming as well as understand how much work I would need to put into this.

Weeks 3 and 4

Pre Production

During the pre production weeks, I did a lot of research and planning. Most of my research surrounded the statistics and news sources I was going to use in my episodes. During this week, I also wrote each episode script outlines as well as the intro and outro scripts. These scripts were loose outlines that would guide my episodes. I created the website where my content would be housed and designed it to fit the podcast branding. I played around with my equipment so that when it came to recording, I was ready. The planning I did in this stage ensured that the red of production would run smoothly

Below is an example of a script I drafted to outline the first episode of Global Norming.

Week 5

Production

Week 5 was dedicated to the production of all of the content. This included recording the intro, outro, and episodes 1-4. This was an extremely time consuming process but it taught me that this project would require a lot of hard work. Once finished, I already knew I would enjoy the outcome. Also included in this week was creating episode graphics. These graphics all correlated to the theme of the episode and I kept them uniform so that there was a consistent theme.

Weeks 6 and 7

Post Production

Perhaps the most time consuming of all of the weeks was the post production week. This week required me to edit the intro and outro files and then all four episodes. This process was done through the Apple app GarageBand, which is a great app for editing podcasts and music. This time consuming process also included adding in royalty free music, and listening to all of the audio back multiple times. When everything was exported, I put it up on my content website where everyone can listen!
